Fontainhas Heritage Walk by Make It Happen

Description
Soak in the rich heritage of a neighborhood described by historian William Dalrymple as a ‘small chunk of Portugal washed up on the shores of the Indian Ocean’, and interact with locals who strive to keep centuries of culture alive to this day. Discover the untold history of the city of Panjim at Tobacco Square, and hear intriguing tales of the neighborhood's former colonial Portuguese residents. Be transported to a bygone era as we explore painstakingly preserved heritage buildings that have survived the onslaught of development in the 21st century. The quaint streets are lined with traditional Portuguese style homes in a palette of striking bright colors, making this every photographer’s paradise. Visit Panjim’s oldest bakery and have a taste of their traditional Goan treats with a refreshing beverage (subject to the bakery’s operational days & timings). Meet with a renowned local Goan musician and enjoy a live performance of his distinctive blend of Konkani and Latin styles.

Fontainhas is not only the oldest but the largest Latin quarter of Asia. Located at the foot of the hills, Altinho hills with springs surround Fontainhas on the west side, which give it its name from Portuguese for “little fountain”. Witness the Portuguese past that eventually survived the onslaught of development in the 21st century. The houses are dressed in yellow, green and blue, balconies fronted by wrought iron railings and tiled roofs transporting you to another era.

I took this tour during the monsoon season, and although it rained some, it honestly made the experience even more memorable. Walking through the rain with umbrellas, enjoying the lush scenery, and having far fewer crowds gave everything a unique atmosphere. Our storyteller, Calvin, was fantastic. He was knowledgeable, engaging, enthusiastic, and had a genuine passion for Goa and its history. He struck the perfect balance between being informative and making the tour feel relaxed and fun. It was obvious that he truly enjoyed sharing the stories, culture, and hidden details that make Goa special. I really appreciated how respectful he was, both toward the residents of the neighborhood and toward our own privacy as guests. He was thoughtful about how we interacted with the community, which made the experience feel authentic and considerate rather than intrusive. By the end of the tour, I knew I had found exactly what I was looking for, so I booked several more tours with Make It Happen that same weekend. If you're looking for an authentic, thoughtfully guided way to explore Goa, I highly recommend them. And don't let the monsoon put you off. It adds a special kind of magic.
We had a great time at fontainhas heritage walk. The whole experience was fun with Divya as our guide sharing all the little nuggets of history as we walked. We also had a surprise planned in this which was very memorable. I’ll highly recommend anyone thinking of doing fontainhas walk to check out make it happen.
I went for Fontainhas Heritage Walk with my fiancée , we were hosted by Rachana Padnekar, in the last week of June, which is an excellent time to be in Goa! First of all I would like to recommend history buffs to explore streets of Fontainhas from the eyes of Ms Rachana. She is quite knowledgeable, an amazing storyteller and planned the sequence of spots in the most perfect way possible that had ended on a melodious note (spoiler alert !) We opted for a group tour, luckily enough we were the only ones who had signed in the slot and we got the unique Solo experience! We will definitely like to be hosted again with Rachana, on similar heritage walks in the future. Pranav & Sara

My friend and I did the Fontainhas Heritage Walk this March, and it was an absolute visual treat! Walking through the old Latin Quarter felt like stepping into a vintage postcard. The colorful Portuguese-style houses—in brilliant shades of yellow, blue, and maroon—look incredible under the crisp March sun. It's a photographer's dream come true. A few tips for a March stroll: Start as early as possible: March marks the beginning of summer in Goa, and the midday heat can be quite intense with zero shade. I highly recommend starting your walk around 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM. The lighting is beautiful, the air is fresh, and you'll have the empty, quiet streets all to yourself and your friend for photos. Stop by a historic bakery: When you need a break from the heat, duck into one of the centuries-old local bakeries (like Confeitaria 31 de Janeiro). Grabbing a wood-fired Portuguese egg tart or Bebinca with an iced coffee is the perfect way to recharge. Respect the locals: Remember that Fontainhas is a living, breathing residential neighborhood. As beautiful as the doorsteps and windows are, be mindful of residents' privacy—keep your noise down and don't trespass on private porches. If you're in Goa this March and want a break from the beaches, this walk is a 10/10 cultural and colorful escape!

Outstanding setting on shores of vast reservoir in which you can swim. Breakfast and other meals were excellent. Staff charming. However music in restaurant incredibly loud and at odds with tranquil setting. In addition breakfast is not available until 8.30 - far too late. No coffee or tea facilities in rooms so, despite the beauty surrounding us and the clean, comfortable rooms, having to wait several hours after waking for any type of refreshment was beyond frustrating. Surely tea and coffee facilities in every room, or at least the ability to access these in communal areas is an essential for all hotels at this level and price bracket? Spoiled our stay - as did thumping music in restaurant, especially in the mornings - made conversation close to impossible.
Absolutely fabulous, a Goa beyond the night life and alcohol parties Smaller details unexplored its been more than 30 years of me coming to goa but the walk was an eye opener.. from st anthony to losing things.. from tiny one step balconies to not so addictions... It is a must to do without a doubt see the place from a tech food storytellers point of view... and you will see goa differently you will see a Goa, all new... Please start in other cities too
