If you are travelling the Central Highlands independently, an hour or two in the museum is an essential primer about the region and it will give you insight to what you will most likely see in the villages. The museum also preserves special traditions and rituals that are fading fast. Three exhibitions tell an important narrative about what shaped Dak Lak province: people and immigration, biodiversity, and history, from prehistoric to present day. Though the focus is Dak Lak and its three indigenous people, the Ede, Mnong and Jarai, the information is relevant to the entire region, as immigration has resulted in many of the ethnic minorities sharing characteristics and beliefs. Signs explain everything from funeral rituals, to the significance of jars, rice wine, gongs and house architecture. There’s even archival video of a water buffalo sacrifice, a ritual that is rarely held these days.

Amazing & wonderful experience

We had a great day tour in Buon Ma Thuot. Mr Tuan Anh picked me up at 8:00 at my hotel. We go around for coffee and breakfast. Then go to Dray Nu, Dray Sap waterfall. On the way, stopped at the coffee plantation, Eakao lake, rice fields. When we arrived at the water falls, we spent 2 hours on foot. The atmosphere at the waterfall is very good, a great tracking day. Return to the museum and take a tour around the city. Finished at 16h Great service, highly recommend.

Fab day tour to the Waterfalls and Ethnographic Museum

Really fun day out with our guides Tuan Anh and his friend who took us to Dray Sap and Dray Nur Waterfalls and the Ethnographic Museum. We started our day with tasty Ban Me sandwiches and coffee in BMT then rode our of town to the waterfalls where not only was I able to take a quick shower under the waterfall to wash off the dust from the road but also got to sing some outdoor Karoake for the bemused locals (who had probably never heard Raspberry Beret before!) After visiting the waterfalls we had a simple but delicious lunch of BBQ'd chicken legs and sticky rice cooked in bamboo with chilli and lime. Then we zoomed back to BMT to vist the interesting history, ethnography and biodiversity exhibitions at the town's main museum. We finished the day off with an iced coffee and a visit to a traditional Vietnamese Longhouse. Our guides dropped us off at the bus station in time for the last bus to Yok Don National Park where we are spending the night before our Elephant experience in the morning. So much packed into one day with such pleasant and informative hosts! Highly recommended!
