Description
Our Durango Jeep tour travels up La Plata Canyon, a rugged ravine nestled in an alpine paradise. Here in this glacially sculpted landscape, you’ll find waterfalls cascading into the canyon, hallways of glimmering aspens, countless wildflowers, wildlife scurrying between the meadows, and panoramic views of Colorado's most beautiful Rocky Mountains. Like we said, paradise! Our fun-loving and experienced guides are Durango locals, who know this canyon's rich history and ecology like nobody else. While other outfitters tend to let the scenery do all the work for them, our guides give you a wealth of insight about what makes this area incredibly special. They're also talented drivers who will get you up this rutted trail without a hitch. Most people don't want to take their own vehicles up this old mining route, and our open-air Jeeps are customized for a smoother ride— although it will still be bumpy about half way through. It's all a part of the fun!

Itinerary
Meet us at our Durango Office in the morning or afternoon for a 4-hour excursion up the ruggedly beautiful wilderness of La Plata Canyon, just 20 minutes from town. The trail starts off smooth and slowly transitions into a rubbled road about half up the canyon. Get ready to rock around and get to know the person next to you! As we make our way up the mountain, we'll stop to check out some waterfalls, meadows, and old remnants from Colorado's wild mining era. On the way up, keep your eyes peeled for deer, marmot, fox, birds of prey— and if you’re lucky, a moose or bear! Once we've reached the top of the canyon, we'll take some time to enjoy a spectacular view of the San Juan Mountains, Colorado's most beloved Rockies! From late June to early August, this is the perfect off-roading trail for wildflowers. In late September to early October, the large aspen groves make for amazing fall colors

Jared went above and beyond with our youngest kids. Showed them mines and rocks and helped the little girl pick wildflowers. Knowledgeable and friendly, Jared has a passion for the history of the area that came through in the tour. Highly recommend!

The jeep ride up to the Colorado Mountains from Durango was a fun morning trip. We were blessed with wonderful weather and our driver/guide Paul managed the very bumpy roads very well. That’s not to say that it wasn’t wildly bumpy— be forewarned— it was bumpier than I expected . The scenery was really beautiful and I enjoyed the waterfalls. Paul was a very nice driver and guide but knew less about the flora than I expected— he was more intent on telling us about all the current housing settlements in this off grid area than the geology and flora. I do think $125 per person which we paid was maybe a little expensive but then there is no way I could have traveled up there on my own. The views were stunning.

We had a great trip with our jeep driver, Jared. I highly recommend him if you have small children or you are looking to do something a little different that is not rafting. He is great with kids, patient, knowledgeable about the landscape, and fun! The best part of our trip was that he really catered to our two young children (4 and 6). My son loved learning about the mines and rocks while my daughter liked collecting the wildflowers. We came home with a bag of unique rocks and a water bottle full of wildflowers. Jared knows just about everything from pointing out wildlife, animal tracks, historical facts, and true local knowledge. He accommodated an appropriate amount of stops and was easy going. We took frequent stops along the way so that our kids could get out and explore and break up the bumpy ride. Each stop we learned something new. In total our trip was about 3 1/2 hours.
Alex and Kaia were great- So welcoming- They put us right at ease the moment we met them. They were so much fun- full of interesting facts which lent a bit of education along the way. I would 100% recommend Mild to Wild for anyone looking for a day of adventure. The sights were breathtaking and something we would never have the chance to see otherwise.
