Meeting Place for "No Hotel Pick-Up" - Museum de Arte do Rio (MAR). The museum is located at Praça Mauá, 5 - Centro, Rio de Janeiro.

At Largo da Prainha you’ll see the Mercedes Baptista Statue. She was the very first African-Brazilian ballet dancer to enroll in the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro's ballet group in the late 1940s. Fun, ice beer, samba, and black music are always in the air.

20 min

Next, our journey will lead us to Pedra do Sal, a revered site in Rio steeped in the history of urban carioca samba. Its significance traces back to the enslaved Africans who toiled to unload imported salt from Portugal, hence its name. These resilient individuals also painstakingly carved the steps that characterize the area, setting the stage for the emergence of the first ranchos carnival, afoxés processions, and sacred spaces in the late 1800s. Following their laborious days, sambistas (samba musicians) and longshoremen would congregate in the homes of Bahian Aunts, forming vibrant samba circles. Notable figures such as Pixinguinha were regular attendees, contributing to the rich tapestry of musical expression. Today, Pedra do Sal remains a vital hub for samba circles and cultural gatherings, carrying forward its legacy as a bastion of Afro-Brazilian heritage and artistic expression.

Cais do Valongo, a world heritage site in Rio de Janeiro, is an old stone wharf built in 1811 to land enslaved Africans. It is estimated that around 900,000 Africans arrived in South America via Valongo. The site has several archaeological layers and is the most significant physical evidence of the arrival of African slaves in the Americas.

The Ethnicities mural is a 3,000 square meter painting located in Rio de Janeiro's Zona Portuária (Saúde). It was created for the 2016 Olympics and features five representatives from different tribes, one from each continent. The Huli, Mursi, Kayin, Supi, and Tapajós tribes were chosen to represent the diversity of the world. The mural took two months of work with 12-hour shifts to complete, using over 3,000 spray cans, 700 liters of colored paint, and 1,800 liters of white paint for the background.

Admission included60 min

After MUHCAB we walk towards IPN a museum and archaeological site in Rio de Janeiro dedicated to honoring the memory of Africans who were brought to the city as slaves. It is located on the site of the "New Blacks Cemetery" and has been offering cultural activities and workshops on the history and culture of people of African descent since 2005. The museum has been recognized by the State and designated as a Cultural Space since 2009.

Admission included70 min

MUHCAB is a museum in Little Africa, based around the Valongo Wharf, a World Heritage Site. It tells the story of the region's largest arrival of enslaved Africans, milestones of black affirmation in Brazil, the development of Afro-Brazilian culture, and contemporary issues faced by black people in Brazil.

Wonderful Walking Tour of African History & Contributions in Brazil

We toured with an incredibly knowledgeable and engaging guide named Myllena. She gave us so much information about the history of the slave trade in Brazil and an informed perspective on the repercussions of the social and economic impact it has had and still has on the Black Brazilians to this day. The tour sparked comparisons to the US (where I am from) and other colonized nations where I have lived (Vietnam, Singapore, Egypt, India, and Nigeria), especially with the recent Ghana resolution that passed in the UN declaring the transatlantic slave trade and the racialized chattel enslavement of Africans as the "gravest crime against humanity." This was an extremely enlightening and informative tour, which also highlighted the resilience of the people and the strong influence Africans had on Brazilian culture. Highly recommend the tour and our guide Myllena who was excellent.

If you’re ever in Rio, please book this tour. Our tour guide carol was absolutely amazing!!! She’s very knowledgeable, organized and has such a sweet spirit. We learned so much about the history of Brasil and Carol also shared a little bit about her own personal background. Whenever I’m in Rio, I will definitely book again with her. Please ask for Carol when you book. Thank you again, Carol and team for putting together such an amazing tour.

Ana Julia was an expert and exceptional tour guide. She is a passionate ambassador for Brazil and Rio! She offered tremendous insight that helped us to better appreciate the rich culture, diversity, fantastic experiences that Rio has to offer today. This is the tour you came to Rio for

Our group of 18 friends and family arrived in Rio as part of the Dave Koz Cruise. My mother discovered Florencios Tours & Travels and connected directly with the owner, Damiana. As fate would have it, she didn't just book us a tour — she introduced Damiana to the entire Dave Koz Cruise community. We were the first cruise ship group to receive the full Florencios experience. We would not be the last. Several dozen other Dave Koz cruisers followed. Way to go, Mom. By the time we confirmed our booking, Damiana felt less like a tour company owner and more like a friend my mom had known for years. That kind of warmth sets a tone — and it carried into every single moment of the day. Our guide was Larissa, with Lucas alongside her to help navigate the group. Larissa is extraordinary. She is energetic, deeply knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about what she does. She didn't just show us places — she told us their stories. From the excavated auction site to the museum, she kept our group engaged with thoughtful questions and a command of Black African history, culture, and celebration that made everything feel alive and meaningful. Then came the carnival site — and Julia. To experience carnival from the inside of the process is something most cruisers never get to do. Our group tried on costumes, danced, and played instruments alongside actual carnival artists. Not as observers. As participants. The kind of moment you cannot manufacture and cannot forget. If you are looking for a tour that centers the Black African diaspora experience — its history, its traditions, its joy — with intelligence, intention, and heart, this is it. Not a footnote. Not a detour. The main event. Damiana, Larissa, Lucas, and Julia: thank you for making Rio unforgettable in all the right ways. This is exactly the kind of experience that stays with you long after the ship has sailed.

Operator response

Dear Jacqueline’s daughter, 🤗 Thank you so much for this beautiful and heartfelt review. Reading your words truly moved us. Your mother’s trust, kindness, and enthusiasm opened a very special door for Florencios Tours & Travel. Because of her, we had the honor of welcoming not only your family and friends, but also many wonderful guests from the Dave Koz Cruise community. That moment will always be part of our story, and we are deeply grateful to her for believing in us and helping introduce our work to such a meaningful group of travelers. We are so happy to know that the experience felt personal, intentional, and unforgettable. This is exactly what we hope to create through our Little Africa journey: not just a tour, but a connection with the history, resilience, culture, and joy of the Black African diaspora in Rio de Janeiro. Your kind words about Larissa, Lucas, and Julia mean so much. Larissa brings knowledge and passion to every story she shares, Lucas helped care for the group with attention and support, and Julia helped make the Carnival experience come alive in such an authentic and joyful way. We will proudly share your message with them. Thank you for recognizing the heart behind our work. It was an honor to welcome your family, your friends, and your mother’s beautiful energy in Rio. We truly hope to welcome you, your family, and friends back to Brazil again — not only for Little Africa, but also to experience the many other Rio must-see private tours and bespoke cultural experiences we lovingly curate. May the memories created that day continue to travel with you long after the ship has sailed. With deep gratitude, Damiana Silva Founder | Florencios Tours & Travel Connecting Cultures. Exploring the best of Rio De Janeiro

My family and I had the privilege of having Carolina as our tour guide for two days while we were in Rio De Janeiro. Carolina was friendly, approachable, and extremely knowledgeable of Rio De Janeiro. She ensured that we saw all of the top sights. She took us to see Christ the Redeemer before the crowds got there. Allowing us plenty of time to enjoy the site and take good pictures. Carolina took us to Frontera Restaurant where we enjoyed amazing local foods. We were allowed time to shop. Overall she made our visit to Rio De Janeiro an unforgettable experience. We made memories that I shall not soon forget.

No Communication. Do better.

We never went because the tour guide changed the location without notifying us. When we arrived at the meeting point no one was there. Seeing a refund now!

Operator response

Dear Michelle, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I am truly sorry for the frustration and disappointment you experienced. Because most guests on that date were arriving from the Celebrity Equinox cruise, we adjusted the meeting point to better accommodate cruise passengers and sent an email in advance on March 15, 2026 with the updated tour details. Our intention was to make the experience easier for guests, never to cause confusion. That said, I completely understand how upsetting it must have been to arrive at the expected meeting point and not find our team there. Please accept my sincere apologies for the inconvenience and the impact this had on your day in Rio. Your refund has now been fully processed. We are also reviewing our communication procedures internally to help ensure situations like this are avoided in the future. Michelle, we truly regret that we missed the opportunity to welcome you and share the history and cultural significance of Little Africa with you. Thank you again for your feedback — it helps us improve. Warm regards, Damiana Silva Florencios Tours & Travel
