The Sqala du Port was built in 1769, under the orders of Sultan Mohammed Ben Abdellah, of the Alaouite dynasty. The Castelo Real was there, and was destroyed for the construction of the port of Essaouira and its ramparts. The stones of the old Castelo Real were used for the construction of the Sqala du Port2. She took part in the defense of the city during the bombardment of Mogador operated by France, within the framework of the Franco-Moroccan war3. It has been classified as a historical monument since the dahir of August 30, 19241.

The Port of Essaouira is an important traditional and historical 18th century fishing port, in Essaouira, on the Atlantic Ocean, Morocco1. Old and picturesque traditional fishing port, the most renowned in the country2, it is one of the 14 main fishing ports in Morocco, and is one of the top places for tourism in Morocco, with its beaches and its nearby fortified Medina of Essaouira on the edge of ocean, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site3.

The ramparts of Essaouira are an important part of the history of Essaouira, a Moroccan maritime city on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. It was in 1506 that the Portuguese built the first ramparts of the city, then called Mogador, which was considered to be an important strategic location. In addition to these ramparts, a port was also built, Mogador then became a key trading post for the Portuguese. The construction of the Fortress, named Castelo Real by the Portuguese, and its ramparts have the main purpose of protecting themselves from foreign invasions, the city being too vulnerable without them. Thus, the ramparts made it possible to repel the successive attacks on the city by the Spaniards, the English, the Dutch and the French. These ramparts, as well as the Castelo Real, will be destroyed in the 18th century by Mohammed III, the Moroccan sultan of the time.

Essaouria a lovely town so worth the trip

Great safe driver on the winding roads up the coast. I was pleased I'd taken an anti-sickness tablet prior to setting off though. We had the same guide as the Marrakech trip (Abdullah) so there was some repetition of information on the bus. At least a smaller number of people this time. We had a stop off at a petrol station for WC (take your own paper or you will have to pay for it). Then we stopped at an argan oil women's co-operative which was a very slick operation. The centre of Essaouria was beautiful and easy to navigate. We had a basic guided tour through the medina and souk and were allowed 10 mins on the city walls. We would have preferred to then have been given free time to find our own lunch and have a wander around as so many lovely little eateries in the town but we were herded without any choice into the worst touristy restaurant and expected to eat a full meal. We then realised half the people had disappeared to do their own thing! I strongly suggest you remove what comes across as an obligatory lunch from this tour.

Lovely Essaouira

Our tour guide Abdul may looked very traditional but he was very cool. We learned a lot about Essaouira, it’s history and culture. The drive was a bit long around 6 hours in total. Wear good shoes and be prepared with unpleasant smell in some places included in the tour.

World Heritage with atmosphere

A city worth seeing. Picked up from the hotel on time in the morning, a total of 12 hours on the road with a pleasant rhythm of breaks. Tour guide with just the right amount of information on the way and during the city tour, not too much and not too little, easy to understand in French, English and German. Of course there was also a stop on the topic of argan oil, but nothing was pushy. I would have liked more free time for my own discoveries and photos, unfortunately I went to eat at the recommended restaurant. The food was good, the price was reasonable, but it took 1.5 hours, so there was only 30 minutes of free time. A shame, but a reason to come back?!

Trip to Essaouira

I was excited about this trip, the journey was shorter than to Marrakesh, in the morning the coordinator arrived at the hotel for us and loaded us into a Škoda Superb (nice to drive a Czech car in Morocco) and took us to the other side of the city, where we changed to a minibus. The journey went quickly and behind me is the old city of Medina - more picturesque and above all cleaner and less dusty than Marrakesh. Next, a tour of the fortress, walls and port. Again a tour of the inside of a classic house, lunch was also with a beautiful view, and shopping is much cheaper than Marrakesh and Agadir, although I was able to bargain hard and I heard from three merchants at the closing of the shop that it is very difficult to trade with seeds - plus one in Marrakesh, he told me that I was rich and that I was robbing him, and after handing over the goods and money, he angrily left the store. Again, the price from Beach Tours is great and much better than with a travel card. I can only recommend, and if someone chooses from several trips, I would rather go to Essaouira than to Marrakech.
