The Old Venetian Port of Heraklion stands as a testament to Crete’s rich maritime history and its strategic importance during the Venetian rule from the 13th to the 17th century. Built to serve as a vital hub for trade and defense, the port was once lined with shipyards and warehouses that supported Venetian naval power in the Eastern Mediterranean. Its well-preserved architecture, stone piers, and arched structures reflect the engineering skill and ambition of the time. Walking along the harbor today, you can still feel the echoes of a vibrant past shaped by merchants, sailors, and centuries of cultural exchange.

Rising proudly at the entrance of Heraklion’s Old Venetian Port, the Koule Fortress—also known as the Rocca al Mare—has stood watch over the harbor for centuries. Built by the Venetians in the early 16th century, this formidable structure was designed to protect the city and its vital maritime routes from pirate raids and enemy fleets. With its thick stone walls, battlements, and storied past, the fortress served not only as a military stronghold but also as a symbol of Venetian power in the Eastern Mediterranean. Today, its enduring presence tells the tale of Heraklion’s strategic importance and the turbulent history of Crete’s coastal defenses.

Fabulous afternoon / evening cruise

We had a fabulous afternoon cruise. The trip was good value for money and the crew friendly and professional. There was plenty of time to swim and snorkel at St George’s Bay, where we stopped, and the food was tasty and plentiful. We were fortunate, as there were only 10 of us (guests), which meant there was enough room to sit and eat comfortably. Though not a major issue, the pick-up / meeting was a little chaotic, as multiple boats pick up from the same place at the same time. Head for the port side of the Marina Cafe and wait near the ‘Dia Island Meeting Point’. We saw plenty of fish, swam in clear waters, and ate and drank well. Highly recommended.

Highly recommended sailing trip to Dia Island

We went with our teens and the trip was excellent. Small group of 12. Alex the skipper and Costas the mate. Sailed from Heraklion old port to Dia. There able to use snorkelling equipment and two paddle boards in the sheltered bay. Alex - he used to be a chef - cooked absolutely delicious shrimp linguine (available without shrimp too) a Greek salad fresh fruit and unlimited drinks including white wine. Sailed back at sunset. Good value for money and great fun.

Very disappointed

We booked a cruise to Dia Island, and at the time of boarding, the Italians who arrived late realized that the cruise might be a bit complicated because they have two young children. As a result, we ended up with three people, and the provider decided to cancel; this is unacceptable, they should have gone ahead anyway; there is a lack of seriousness from this provider, Rocca a Mare Sailing.

I recommend this agency for its seriousness!

We spent a wonderful afternoon at sea that ended with a fabulous sunset! Skippers Amalia and Yannis were among the most pleasant and knowledgeable we have had on our sea trips, and we have been doing at least one a year for 20 years. The food was delicious, the drinks varied and sufficient, the group on the boat was pleasant and Amalia knew how to share her attention with everyone while Yannis sailed with professionalism.
