Superb moment, landscape more than sublime. A kind guide with a sense of humor. There were 6 of us, the whole tribe loved it!
The visit was scenically spectacular, even in less than perfect weather. Above all, it gave a flavour of the real Tahiti, which is nowadays obscured by the urban bustle of Papeete and the coastal sprawl that surrounds the island’s exterior. Pick-up was prompt and in the exact spot advised. First stop was to an excellent bakery: I had brought along my own vegetarian sandwiches just in case, but needn’t have bothered, since nice veg lunch options were on sale at the bakery. I was the last to join the group so had the front passenger seat of the 4x4 instead of an open-air place on the back of the truck. But the view was still good, and I had a more comfortable ride, given the very poor state of the road across the island (37 km of very bumpy and mostly single-file dirt track). After skirting the north coast for a few km we turned inland, climbing almost immediately. We had many ‘programmed’ photo-opportunity stops, and the guide was happy to stop anywhere on request for a photo, or to let passengers take a quick toilet break in the greenery. The picnic stop was beside a plunge pool where members of the group were able to go swimming, and the guide provided fresh fruit to accompany the otherwise self-paid lunch. The route crossed many fords, skirted river valleys, pencil waterfalls, green lakes and the high peaks of the caldera. We traversed the spooky road tunnel in the centre of the island, saw freshwater eels and passed by one of the island’s main hydro-electric plants. Mosquitoes and other biting insects were hardly noticeable. For the expert driving, knowledgeable guiding and fabulous scenery the trip was well worth the expense and totally safe. The only drawback was that advance communication with the company was a little haphazard, and they seemed to have lost my reservation and pre-payment, though this was eventually sorted out.
Nice and good-humored guide! Swimming in a river and a very welcome little fruity surprise!
Awesome experience out tour guide was very welcoming and made sure everyone was enjoying the fun!! It is a bit bumpy so just beware.
Be sure to read the exclusions. The trip is very bumpy. You have a choice of sitting which is not good if you have back or neck issues or standing which is not good if you have knee issues or your arms are not strong enough to keep you from banging into the sides as the truck lurches from side to side due to deep potholes. The swimming has a steep entrance and the guide will forbid you from going if he thinks you are not fit enough. As per the description: Not recommended for travelers with back problems Not recommended for pregnant travelers No heart problems or other serious medical conditions Travelers should have a moderate physical fitness level PROHIBITED for children under 3 years old PROHIBITED or Not recommended for over 65s too much shaking PROHIBITED LUGGAGE SUITCASES ETC FORBIDDEN to people who do not like nature FORBIDDEN to people in bad moods, stay at your hotel The views are great, but the ride is taxing. As per the description, if you are not young and fit, maybe rethink going.
The views and scenery were spectacular! Our guide was very knowledgeable and personable - these things were wonderful about the tour. However, the road is incredibly bumpy for the duration of the drive (approx 6 hours) which became quite monotonous and uncomfortable after a short while. While this is out of the control of the operators, it did put a bit of a dampen on the day for me.
The trip was fantastic - we saw a part of the island that it seems is much less traveled. Based on what I saw there was maybe 100 people a day that take this trip. Vaitea was an excellent host - friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating- we had a mixed group - my family spoke mainly English, another spoke mainly French, and a couple with the husband speaking mainly English but the wife fluent in both French and English. Vaitea was able to accommodate all of us seamlessly and had great energy! I would certainly recommend having the top off of the truck so you have the full panoramic view. Loved seeing the eels which proved to my family they exist after a visit to Source de Vaima the day prior where we didn’t see any!
Wow Amazing! If you get a chance do this tour. I know everyone loves the ocean but when in Tahiti Island do this tour. It is truly a Jungle Safari tour minus the animals but the beauty of nature and the construction of this wonderful island is amazing and beautiful. Viator was a great guide stopping for photos long enough and giving us the background information of the culture.
There are 5 stars for the experience and 5 stars extra!!!!The ride is spectacular with amazing views. And exhausting because you have to stand and hold on properly. Because our ship arrived late ,the driver and our 4 super nice companions waited extra.Thank you again!!!
An action packed day of adventure. We had the perfect day in Papeete and the weather couldn’t have been better. The views were amazing and our lunch stop and swim was perfect. The perfect way to spend a day getting to see the island from the inside out 👌😊
