The Most Visited temple in the city, the Gangaramaya Temple which organizes Sri Lanka’s largest and the most colourful Vesak festival annually, has a history of 120 years. It was established in 1885 by Venerable Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thera at a time when Buddhist and cultural resurgence were much needed as the country was under the colonial rule.

30 min

The temple was built in Maradana, Colombo by a group of Indian Chetti traders known as ‘Thiruvilanga Nakarathar’ who moved to Sri Lanka for business two hundred years ago.

Every architectural square inch of this monument is filled with lavish symbols of the island’s rich history and political freedom. At the entrance to the building is an imposing statue of D.S. Senanayake, Sri Lanka’s first prime minister, surrounded by four menacing stone lions with protruding eyes. These feral guardians were recreated from the lion statues of the 13th century Yapahuwa kingdom. The most prominent feature of the monument, the assembly hall, was inspired by the “Magul Maduwa,” the royal court of the King of Kandy, the last kingdom on the island. Incidentally, it was at the Magul Maduwa that the Kandyan chieftains handed over the island’s sovereignty to the British throne in 1815.

The best way to see busy Colombo!

Colombo is a busy city and traffic can be crippling, but the best way to see it is with an experienced Tuk Tuk driver. Colombo also has more interesting thing to see than you might think - and the best way to see them is by taking a Tuk Tuk safari! Travelling in Sri Lanka with some friends, I was looking forward to doing this trip a bit - but it turned out to be much more fun than I thought it would be - now I wouldn't recommend a trip to Colombo without one! Our drivers were great, informed, funny, has laid-on drinks and refreshments for us and even (by pure coincidence) a Tuk Tuk with my name on the windshield! Let them take you to the bonkers Bhuddist temple with collection of donated items that range from decorative junk to vintage Rolls Royces, the Hindu Temple, the spice sellers, coffer and tea dealers and more. Some of these are things you might not choose to do on your own, but are worth doing with these guys.
