Itinerary

60 min

Your Cajas National Park tour begins with a scenic drive from Cuenca into the western Andes. As the city gives way to mountain landscapes, your guide will introduce the park’s páramo ecosystem, its glacial lakes, and its importance as a protected water source for southern Ecuador. Cajas is part of the Macizo del Cajas Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO in 2013.

Admission included30 min

Our first stop is Tres Cruces, one of the most impressive viewpoints in Cajas National Park. This area marks the continental water divide, where rainfall flows either toward the Amazon Basin or toward the Pacific Ocean. We will take a short walk nearby to enjoy the highland scenery, dramatic mountain views, and the fresh air of the Andean páramo.

Admission included30 min

We continue to the Toreadora Refuge, the main access point to Cajas National Park and one of its most visited areas. Located beside Toreadora Lake, this stop offers beautiful views of the surrounding wetlands, hills, and native vegetation. The area is also an ideal place to understand how the park’s lakes and sponge-like páramo help regulate water for Cuenca.

Admission included180 min

From Toreadora, we begin a guided hike along Route 1, a moderate 3-hour trail through páramo grasslands, wetlands, rocky paths, and high-altitude lagoons. The guide will adjust the pace to the group, making the experience comfortable while taking time to enjoy the views, observe unique native flora, and possibly spot local bird species such as the beautiful blue Tit-like Dacnis, highland hummingbirds, and other Andean birds. Unlike a simple sightseeing visit, this tour is designed to experience Cajas on foot, with meaningful stops along the route to appreciate the park’s geology, biodiversity, and quiet mountain landscapes.

20 min

During the hike, we will visit the Polylepis Forest, one of the most unique environments in the park. These remarkable high-altitude trees, known for their thin, layered bark, create a rare and peaceful forest landscape surrounded by mountains and lagoons. Walking through this ancient-looking forest can feel like stepping into a scene from The Lord of the Rings, with twisted trees, soft moss, and misty Andean scenery. Your guide will explain why this ecosystem is so important for biodiversity and conservation in the Andes.

Admission not included60 min

After the hike, we will enjoy lunch at a traditional restaurant near the park. Trout is the local specialty and a favorite option after walking through the cool highlands, while vegetarian and vegan options are also available. This stop adds a warm cultural touch to the day and supports local businesses connected to the communities around Cajas National Park.

45 min

After lunch, we return comfortably to Cuenca, completing a full-day experience that goes beyond a quick viewpoint stop. With guided hiking, scenic landscapes, local insight, and time to connect with the park’s ecosystems, this tour offers a deeper and more active way to experience Cajas National Park.

It is a unique experience....

It is a unique experience. Our guide, Xavier, is a man with great knowledge of the Park and unmatched kindness. His explanations and teachings were very valuable to us. He took his time during the walk and was always attentive to us, asking how we felt and making pauses during the tour. We learned about the vegetation and wildlife of the Park because Xavier explained everything to us in detail. Very beautiful tour!

Wonderful hike

Fabulous walk in El Cajas national park with an excellent guide, Diego. He was very knowledgeable and patient as the altitude slowed me down on some of the steep uphills. Please note that the tour was not as advertised, as the laguna Llavuicu has been closed since 2024 & the tour itinerary has not been updated. The longer walk in El Cajas was an excellent alternative. Lunch was delicious.

Eperencia excelente

I've seen a lot of nature parks and protected areas in Ecuador and across the Americas and can say this is truly one worth visiting. Xavier was our guide and did an excellent job of responding and adapting to collecive interests and abilities. He knows a lot about flora and fauna, making the experience truly excellent. There were so many trail options, and he did a great job describing them so we could decide the pace and difículty we were willing to go to see as much as possible. If you have never hiked in Paramo before, be prepared for cold humidity and wet shoes.

Operator response

We’re truly honored to hear that, after visiting so many nature parks and protected areas across the Americas, you consider this one especially worth visiting. 🌿✨ We’re delighted that Xavier helped make your experience memorable with his flexibility, knowledge of the flora and fauna, and attention to the group’s interests and hiking abilities. It’s wonderful to know you enjoyed exploring the different trail options and finding the perfect balance of pace and adventure. Thank you as well for sharing that helpful tip for future travelers.🥾🌧️🌱

We were fascinated if wonderful service

It has been a long time since our tour with Javier Vallejo, I hadn’t really taken the time to write the review, but it has been one of the best because not to say that the best tour guide we have had. It should be clarified that we love to travel and have been to quite a few countries. So without a doubt with him you will find a noble man, charismatic, experienced, knowledgeable of the whole area and if history and above all wonderful photographer. We were fascinated by your service. My husband and I were fascinated with the complete tour and experience he gave us. Thank you so much.

Operator response

One of a kind tour of the Cajas!

Diego was an outstanding guide, full of botanical and historical knowledge. He is friendly and fluent in English. Cajas was absolutely gorgeous, and we look forward to hiking there more when we move here. The trout lunch was perfect after a 3-hr-hike at 13,000 ft elevation. We highly recommend this tour.
