Description

The Bridge on the River Kwai and Thailand-Burma Railway Tour offers a fascinating journey into the history and landscapes of Thailand during World War II. This guided tour takes you to the iconic bridge, which became a symbol of the hardships faced by soldiers and prisoners of war during the construction of the railway. Your adventure begins with a Hotel pick up from Bangkok and then taking a scenic drive to Kanchanaburi, where you’ll learn about the historical significance of the bridge and the railway, often referred to as the "Death Railway." As you stand on the bridge, you can appreciate the stunning views of the river and surrounding countryside, all while reflecting on the poignant history. The tour includes a ride on the Thailand-Burma Railway, providing a unique opportunity to experience the same tracks that were built under harrowing conditions. You'll also visit the War Museum and the Allied War Cemetery, which honor the memories of those who suffered during this period.

Itinerary

300 min

The Khwae Yai River, also known as the Si Sawat, is a river in western Thailand. It has its source in the Tenasserim Hills and flows for about 380 kilometres through Sangkhla Buri, Si Sawat, and Mueang Districts of Kanchanaburi Province, where it merges with the Khwae Noi to form the Mae Klong River at Pak Phraek.

30 min

The bridge on the river Kwai, that many people know from the 1957 movie with the same name or from the book by Pierre Boulle is part of the infamous Death Railway, built during World War II from 1942 to 1943. The railway connected Kanchanaburi in Western Thailand with Rangoon in Myanmar, called Burma back then, and was about 415 kilometers long. On both ends construction began in June 1942 working towards each other. In October 1943 the two sides met, finishing the railway.

Admission included20 min

The Kanchanaburi War Cemetery is the main prisoner of war cemetery for victims of Japanese imprisonment while building the Burma Railway. It is on the main road, Saeng Chuto Road, through the town of Kanchanaburi, Thailand, adjacent to an older Chinese cemetery.

Admission included20 min

This small museum, opened in 1977, mostly focuses on the terrible ordeals of the POWs who built the Death Railway. Their harsh living conditions are shown in many original photos, letters and drawings from that time as well as personal effects and war relics, including an unexploded Allied bomb dropped to destroy the bridge. One of the three galleries is built from bamboo in the style of the shelters (called attap) the POWs lived in.

Insightful tour for military history buffs!

A very worthwhile tour for those interested in military history, and Oom, our guide, was able to impart a huge amount of information. It was a long, but varied day, and it certainly was filled with activities. Highly recommended to other travellers.

My Trip Experience.

I had an amazing experience on this trip and it exceeded my expectations. Mr. Oom our guide is quite a character and made the long day enjoyable. Because this is a long day with the drive there and back. Once there the visit to the small museum and then the real attraction begins with the long boat to the bridge then watching the train cross then you can cross at your leisure. Then a short drive to the station for a 75min train journey through picturesque country side. You should be aware that as the windows are open to see everything fumes and dust do enter the coaches but it's a small price to pay for the experience. After the train ride we went for the buffet lunch at a restaurant with beautiful views over the valley and the food wasn't bad either. Overall I would say this trip is worth the cost and the time.

If you enjoy history,...

If you enjoy history, this experience is for you! They organized all details so incredibly, from bathroom breaks, lunch, and pickups/drop offs. Be prepared to pay the 300 bath cost for a train seat, per person, in cash. Water was also provided throughout. Our tour guide, Oom, was very thorough and knowledgeable about the history of the Bridge and POWs. The tour may leave you feeling a bit melancholy, but overall it was an experience we were glad to attend.

Operator response

Dear Serina_L, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your review! We are glad to hear that you had a meaningful experience on our Bridge on the River Kwai and Thailand-Burma Railway tour, and that our team managed all the logisitics—from pickups to comfort breaks—seamlessly for you. Kanchanaburi holds an incredibly profound place in global history. As you beautifully noted, learning about the POWs and walking these grounds can bring about a sense of melancholy, but it is an incredibly vital and poignant history to remember. We are so glad that your guide, Oom, was able to provide thorough, knowledgeable insights to make the journey impactful. Thank you also for sharing the helpful reminder for future travelers regarding the local cash requirement for the train ride! We truly appreciate you choosing I Asia Thailand for such an important journey, and we hope to welcome you back for more historical and cultural tours in the future. Warm regards, Nick (IAsia Thailand Online)

Excellent tour, superb guide, unforgettable experience

This I Asia Thailand tour, with our guide Mr Rach, was an excellent day and exceeded my expectations. Communication from both Mr Ake and Mr Rach was superb. I was kept well informed before the tour day, which made everything feel easy and organised. I recommend taking sunscreen, which I forgot, and a hat. There was a welcome bottle of water on pick-up, as well as stops along the way to purchase cold drinks. And take a small pack of tissues because some of the stops didn’t have toilet paper! The order of the stops was different from the original booking, but we fitted so much into the day that it didn’t matter at all. The pacing was perfect. I was post-surgery, so I was a little worried about my energy and mobility, but everything was manageable. Both the tour operator and the other guests were extremely supportive and protective. Mr Rach was incredibly knowledgeable about the sites we visited and answered every question. The sites themselves were moving and memorable. He also took photos of everyone in the group throughout the day — and he definitely knows all the best shots! He sent them to us via WhatsApp afterwards so we could keep them. He made sure we had the best seats on the train ride along the “Death Railway”. The upgrade from economy — aka cattle class with wooden seats — was optional, but for only 200 THB we were able to get padded vinyl seating. We were also given instructions on the best side of the train to sit on for the greatest views. There was even a surprise welcome package on the train, with a bottle of cold water, a cooling wipe and a small cake. There was a buffet lunch included with a wide variety of foods — I’m a fussy eater but found the “Thai KFC” as Mr Rach called it (crumbed chicken thighs) and fries suited my palate. The others who were more food-oriented enjoyed the range of soups and other dishes available. Drinks were reasonably priced and the sweets were delicious. Over the course of the day, we travelled by long boat, train, air-conditioned van and on foot, which made the whole experience varied, interesting and unforgettable. Highly recommend I Asia Thailand and Mr Rach.
