Description
Step into the colorful world of Sri Lankan batik at Shermila Batiks, a family-run workshop founded in 1991. What began as a small home business has grown into a lively center of creativity and tradition, now proudly continued by the second generation to keep this beautiful art alive. Located in Koggala, just a short drive from Galle, the factory and gallery welcome you to discover authentic handcrafted clothing, accessories, and home décor made with care and skill. Your experience begins with a guided factory tour, where you’ll watch artisans transform plain fabric into vibrant designs using the traditional wax-resist dyeing method. See each stage of drawing, waxing, dyeing, and boiling as the colors and patterns come to life. Then join a hands-on workshop and create your own batik piece. With expert guidance, you’ll design, wax, and dye your fabric, leaving with a unique handmade souvenir and a meaningful cultural experience.

Absolutely fabulous. Great experience. Had a fun visit. Lovely morning tea served too. Traditional technique used. Beuatiful family run business.
This was truly one of the best experiences we have had! We were three adults, 1 teenager and two kids (8 and 9) and everyone enjoyed it. The explanation and teaching is EXCELLENT - great amount of information, practical, fascinating. You are not rushed and really given the time and space to sketch, wax and watching the color process. We each produced beautiful images and loved the whole process.
We had a lovely morning learning traditional techniques for making batik. We then created our own batik pieces which were a lovely keepsake from our holiday. This is a family run business. They make you feel very welcome. Everything is explained so clearly. It was lovely to support a genuine local family run business. They also have a show room with their own batik creations. No pressure to buy but seeing the work they create after learning the process is amazing. A lovely way to learn more about Sri Lankan culture and traditions while enjoying a relaxing morning and creating your own keep sake.
This is a great experience. They give you a lot of creative freedom here and allow you to explore your creation. I would highly recommend this.
A lovely family run business. I was made to feel welcome and had a creative and informative experience at the workshop and left with a lovely piece of batik.
We spent a wonderful afternoon with this amazing family learning about and producing a traditional Batik. Such a unique experience and highly recommended whether you're 'arty' or not. Thank you "Mum"

We booked a workshop for 5 people and enjoyed a great afternoon learning the ropes of how to make a batik cloth. Thank yoy for the pleasant time
We had the best experience! 100% recommend! They showed us and helped through the entire process and were so nice! Plus you get to keep the amazing art work you made!! They are so kind and served us tea and tradition snack when we waited :) 10/10!
Thank you very much for your wonderful feedback! 🌸 We’re delighted you enjoyed the workshop, the artwork you created, and our hospitality. 🙏✨
My mom, dad, and I did the workshop and showroom tour and had an absolutely FANTASTIC time. The workshop began as 9:30am and ended at about 12:00pm, with the showroom tour in the middle — we were served tea, bananas, and some yummy steamed snacks. We were ably guided by the team (aunty has been a batik artist for over 4 decades!) to make our own designs. There was ample time to learn all parts of the batik process, and Reeha was great at explaining everything. We are super impressed with our results, in spite of the fact that none of us are artistic. The showroom has a very nice selection of pieces to choose from if you wish to buy. please not that the workshop is conducted in an unfinished building so you need to be able to climb stairs without a railing and be generally spry. also, there’s a little bending involved in the process.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We’re so happy your family enjoyed the workshop and tour. Aunty and Reeha will be thrilled to hear your kind words. Hope to see you again!
