Maeklong Railway Market Maeklong Railway Market, located in Samut Songkhram, Thailand, around 37 miles west of Bangkok, looks like any other open-air market in Asia. There are tropical fruits and vegetables such as lychee, durian, and mango in big brightly colored piles, variety of dried spices, pastes and herbs, freshly caught seafood and other local foods. The crowd weave their way around in between vendors, picking up whatever they need for the day. The market is sheltered by low-hanging awnings/umbrellas and if you look closely, you will notice that you are actually walking on train rails.

Nakhon Pathom Nakhon Pathom Province centuries ago was a coastal city on the route between China and India; due to sedimentation from the Chao Phraya river, the coast line moved much farther to sea. When the Tha Chin river changed its course, the city lost its main water source and thus was deserted, the population moving to a city called Nakhon Chaisi (or Sirichai). King Mongkut (Rama IV) ordered the restoration of Phra Pathom Chedi, which was then crumbling and abandoned in the jungle. A city gradually formed around it, bringing new life to Nakhon Pathom. A museum presents the archaeological record of the city’s history.

A proper day trip

We booked the day before and the operator agreed to meet us at the hotel at 7am the next morning. They arrived promptly and there was a driver and a tour guide with very good English which isn’t all that common in Thailand. We were told we were the only ones on the tour so we had the whole air con van to ourselves. Made for a comfy ride. We first visited the railway market, had time for photos and to see some stalls. We tried some local food at the market, saw the train amble past and then headed to the floating market. At the floating market we shopped around, got on a boat and had a 45 minute tour of the canals. Finally off to the stunning and huge stupa which we walked round. Throughout we were provided very informative explanations of everything we saw and about Thailand and Bangkok more generally. We had some lunch in a very local like food market restaurant and the price was very low but the quality of food was delicious. Because the tour was so personal, we devoured so much information from a great personal tour guide. We got back to the hotel around 3pm so we had time to enjoy sunset and the evening without feeling rushed. It was a great day out, we learned so much and we found our tour guide to be perfect.
