Led by our fun, knowledgeable, and passionate tour guides, and including a thrilling 30 minute jet boat experience and return to Christchurch aboard the world famous TranzAlpine, this journey is one you will never forget! Please note that this tour is not suitable as a shore excursion, and runs in reverse over winter.

Itinerary
As we make our way through the Selwyn District, you will be greeted by Springfield, where we will then make our turn off towards the team at Alpine Jet Thrills. It is here that you will embark on your thrilling 30 minute jet boat ride across the braided shallows of the Waimakariri river! Take in the beautiful scenery from one of New Zealand’s most challenging and exhilarating rivers, and discover why Canterbury is the home of jet boating.
Next up we stop at Lake Lyndon. Nestled at the base of Porters Pass, Lyndon, or Te Hāpua Waikawa, is popular amongst jetboaters, bird watchers, and brave swimmers. It is known as one of this area's colder lakes.
Castle Hill, or Kura Tāwhiti, is perhaps one of Canterbury’s most distinguishable settings. Famous for its scenery that would later inspire Middle Earth™, nearby Flock Hill, who Castle Hill shares its geology with, went on to become one of the filming locations used for The Chronicles of Narnia - The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. The weathered limestone rocks sit proudly abreast the tussocky hills that were once in the ocean. Over time they have eroded away, forming the amazing unique shapes you see today. While you walk amongst the rocks, you might catch a glimpse of climbers and boulderers who frequent the area. Please note that this is not a guided walk, so you will be left to explore this piece of beauty on your own.
Ōpōrea, or Lake Pearson, is the largest of three mountain lakes on the pass. This picturesque glacial lake is surrounded by the Southern Alps, and is a popular spot for swimmers, fishing and visitors. Significantly, the lake was, and is still used as a site of mahinga kai (food gathering) for local iwi.
Also known as Death's Corner, the Otira Viaduct Lookout is an amazing spot to see the National Park in all its glory. This bridge is the only reason that driving through Arthur’s Pass is possible today. At 440 metres long, it is a true feat of engineering. The lookout is a great spot for a photo framing viaduct and the surrounding landscape. Keep your eyes peeled at this stop! With a bit of luck, you might even see a wee Cheeky Kea - New Zealand’s sneaky alpine parrot!
We depart the lookout and head towards Arthur’s Pass Village. Located 740 metres above sea level, you will be able to experience the majestic Southern Alps up close. Once we arrive, you can choose to either walk to Devils Punch Bowl, or grab a coffee and spend some time exploring the local shops.
Devils Punch Bowl - This walking track is approximately 1 hour long, with a gradual incline (including steps) towards a ferocious 131 metre tall waterfall. Fitness is low to moderate as you walk through the bush and native beech forest. Please note that depending on time, your guide will let you know how long you have and will assist you on the day in regard to the best activity for the weather and time allocated.
The highlight of this tour is the return trip to Christchurch aboard the TranzAlpine. Departing Arthur’s Pass, enjoy the views from the train’s open air carriage. IMPORTANT: Please note that TranzAlpine bookings are managed by Great Journeys New Zealand, who cannot be held responsible for any missed connections due to delayed train arrivals. If you have onward travel (such as flights), please be aware that the service may experience delays of 30 minutes or more beyond the scheduled arrival into Christchurch at 7pm. As such, we recommend allowing extra time to ensure you have ample time for any connections. Please also note that due to changes to daylight saving, the length of daylight is shortened meaning that some of the journey may take place in the dark due to earlier sun setting. As Great Journeys is a third party supplier, we are not responsible for any delays or issues that may occur while aboard the TranzAlpine. The highlight was an amazing jet boat ride with Alpine Jet thrills Springfield, along the crystal blue Waimakariri!
Enjoyed this tour. I absolutely recommend doing it including the jet boat and alpine train for return! It might seem a bit boring without.
A fun trip with a small group of people. Our guide, Joseph made us feel comfortable and his commentary was insightful for us. Wonderful views and fun actitivites for anyone who wants a taste of Canterbury.
I won't comment too much on Arthur's Pass itself - if you've researched anything on Christchurch you will know that it's an essential place to visit. Instead I will comment on specifically the tour guide for this tour, which was fantastic. Joseph, our guide, did a flawless job of handling the overall tour logistics, making sure we were all very well looked-after whilst also injecting a lot of humour and history about the region too. We had a tour group with a wide diversity of people and abilities, and he was able to make sure that everyone got to do and see something memorable. I will note that this tour comes with the option of doing jet boating - I was tossing and turning whether or not to do it, but I'm very glad I did because it was an amazing experience, and I would recommend it to others of all ages. Do note that the jet boating requires a minimum of two people in order to go ahead, so if you're a solo traveller you might be taking a gamble. I would not hesitate to recommend this tour.
Kia ora Matt, Thank you so much for your review of your recent trip with us to Arthur's Pass! It is certainly a pretty special destination, with the jet boat becoming an ever popular add on! We are equally pleased to hear that Joseph's insight helped make your journey with us memorable. We have passed this onto him directly :) Wishing you safe travels around the rest of Aotearoa New Zealand!
A fun, packed day of adventures. It was a nicely curated series of stops. Smooth connections between and a caring guide.
Kia ora, thank you so much for your review! It is great to hear that you enjoyed your recent Arthur's Pass tour. By the sounds of it, you took away plenty of memories and photos as souvenirs of your adventure! Wishing you safe travels around the rest of Aotearoa New Zealand!
Great buffet, beautiful grounds and fun sheep show. Boat ride was awesome (take the catamaran) It’s much faster
Kia ora Richard, Many thanks for your review! It's great to hear that you had an awesome day :)
What started out as a dreary rainy day turned into a lovely experience. The jet boating was fantastic as the friendly couple that owned the jet boat was quite friendly. Get ready for a ride! Also don’t feed the kea when you get to the cafe at the end of the trip no matter how insistent it is. Unfortunately the train ride back was underwhelming as the rain drowned out some of the views. It’s a nice train ride though as I found it to be relaxing after a long day.
Thank you for taking the time to write us a reivew Ben. We are sorry the weather runined your train jounrey. We are very happy that you didnt mark us down on our review for this :)
We recently took this trip through New Zealand's stunning Arthur's Pass and surrounding sites, and it was an unforgettable experience! Our driver, Clive, was not only incredibly knowledgeable but also had a fantastic sense of humor that kept us laughing throughout the journey. He shared fascinating facts about the landscapes, wildlife, and local history, making every stop feel special. The views were breathtaking, from dramatic mountain ranges to peaceful valleys, and Clive's lively commentary added so much to the trip. I highly recommend this tour for anyone looking to explore New Zealand in a fun, engaging way!
We took the Arthur’s Pass daytrip with the TranzApline train on the return leg. Clive is a very informative, knowledgable guide. Really liked his relaxed, unhurried style. The lunchpacks were brilliant and they catered for our veggie diet. The minibus was also very comfortable to travel in. I have no hesitation in recommending this travel company. Keep up the good work guys.
Thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely review! I am so glad Clive was able to make your day so special, I will pass this on as he will really appreciate it :) All the best for the rest of your travels and hope to see you on board again soon.
