Itinerary
The huge expanse of grass you see on the other side of the canal is none other than the Passover. Its real name is the Mars field, but the Annecians still call it the Paquier, which means Pasture and recalls that space was once located outside the city
We arrive at the Pont des Amours. Another symbolic place of the city. The bridge offers breathtaking views of the lake and Swan Island. His romantic name actually has a double meaning.
It’s time for you to reconnect with the surrounding beauty and enjoy your walk along the gardens of Europe. This English park has changed a lot. In medieval times, it housed what were called “health huts” installed on small islands lost in the middle of the swamps.
This strange sundial, from its original name, the Gnomon of Brother Arsène, is a 7-pointed star capable of measuring time. It’s a bit technical so I advise you to read the plate for more details.
With this Swiss postcard look, Lake Annecy is the real Rising Star of the city! The second largest glacial lake in France, behind Le Bourget, this lake, protected from sewage discharge and closely monitored, has earned the nickname of the purest lake in Europe!
On the Town Inn Square, you have, as the name suggests on one side, the Town Inn and in front, the Church of Saint Maurice. That's a lot of churches for such a small town! Annecy is nicknamed “the city of 5 steeples”!
You now arrive at the Place de Saint-François-de-Sales, in front of the church of the same name. It is also called the parish of the Italians, for the simple reason that it is mainly frequented by the Italian community of Annecy.
You see it and you’ve been waiting for it, so let’s attack right away via the famous Palais de l’Ile, more commonly known as the old prison. It is the most photographed monument in the city.
You noticed that the streets of Annecy remained very typical medieval. Fortified gates are a good example.
Here you are, facing Annecy Castle, overlooking the old town on the mountainside. Strategically placed to monitor the entire plain, it allowed to observe the movements on the road between Geneva and Italy.
There are many opportunities to take beautiful photos in Annecy! Here, no flowered canals or glittering lake, but the Saint Maurice Esplanade still offers you a beautiful panorama of the Savoyard rooftops with the beautiful mountains as a backdrop.
Here you are on the first stone bridge of Annecy, built in the 13th century. It allowed the route of the Alps that linked Geneva to Italy to cross the Thiou.
From the pier of the bishopric, you can observe a magnificent alignment of old houses flush with the water. A decor that leaves dreamers
Here you are in one of the main streets of the city. This is the first street that allowed to cross Annecy entirely by wagon!
Here we are in a much more modern square, St. Clair Square. A little ski resort side of the 80s, but whatever.
Here you are in front of one of the Thiou canals. Although this river is one of the smallest in France, barely 4 kilometres long, it has had a considerable impact on the creation and expansion of Annecy!
Some memories are to be marked with a white stone, others deserve a Golden Baluster. On Easter Day 1728, Jean Jacques Rousseau met Mme de Warens.
You now arrive in front of the Church of Our Lady of Liesse. It was founded in the 14th century by the Counts of Geneva who wanted a place worthy of the name to welcome their future burials.
When the Rue Royale becomes Rue du Pâquier, you can observe a very old shaft margin. This well dates back to the 15th century.
The Old Sales Inn you see in front of you is one of the few mansions in Annecy. It was built by the family of Sales, therefore descended from Saint Francis of Sales.

We bought this walking tour and then we had to download an “Inway App” to use the tour. It says the tour is available in English, French and Spanish. We could not get the English version and had to listen to the points of interest in French. We found the directions difficult to follow as it did not give directions. It only told you when you were off the tour. You followed the blue line for the points of interest but the blue line was difficult to follow. One minute you were following it and the next you were off the path and you were given a red warning to get back on the path. We’ve done other walking audio tours but this one was not user friendly.
Hello Lewis44, I apologize for the difficulties you experienced with the language settings and the navigation. By default, the application sets itself to French when entering the code. To change the language, here are the steps: Click on the Settings menu (the gear icon). Look for the Language options. Select English, even if it already appears to be selected. Tapping it forces the application to refresh and load the correct audio and text files. Regarding the navigation, the application relies on your device's GPS to track your location against the blue route line. The system is designed to provide visual routing and off-path alerts rather than turn-by-turn voice directions. Georges | Inway
A beautiful discovery of the old town through a route one would not necessarily take without the app. Instructive comments. Beautiful app👌
The route is interesting as it brings together the main sites of the city, and the commentary is thorough without being too long.
The audio wouldn’t come on unless you were standing in the exact spot so it was not very useful to me. I just wanted to hear the history and highlights while I was walking around.
Hello Laura, I apologize that the automatic audio triggering did not meet your expectations during your tour in Annecy. Our application uses GPS to automatically play commentaries when you approach specific points of interest on the route. This design ensures the historical information matches the exact sites you are viewing. However, if you prefer to listen to the highlights while walking freely outside these designated zones, you can manually play the audio at any time by tapping the points directly on the app's map. It was a little bit difficult to get the code. And the location accuracy was not great. Some stops were wrong or off location.
Hello Lisa, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I am sorry to hear that your experience in Annecy did not fully meet your expectations. Regarding the activation code, I understand it can be a bit confusing; it is typically located on the PDF voucher sent by Viator immediately after booking. As for the location accuracy, GPS signals can sometimes be affected by the narrow streets or tall buildings in the old town. We are constantly working on refining our geofencing to make the triggers as precise as possible. We hope that despite these technical hiccups, you were still able to enjoy the charm and history of the "Venice of the Alps." Best regards, Georges
Very very good experience! I visited Annecy and was able to discover the city in perfect autonomy, which is really ideal when you travel alone and especially when you do not know the city at all and you have no idea what to visit. The route is very clear and easy to follow, and the voice is really nice to listen to. The tour offers content on the history of the city and monuments, without it becoming long, it is precise, well dosed and super interesting. Even practical information such as the location of public toilets is indicated, which is very welcome and shows that everything has been thought out to facilitate the visit.
