The Groote Museum is to the right when you visit the zoo. There is a lovely terrace on the grounds and a small cafė with the most delicious chocolate chip cookies. The museum itself is a science museum. Get your audio guide downstairs then off you go. The interactive exhibits are absolutely fantastic and cover a wide variety of topics. After exploring for a while a staff member invited us to an interactive discussion on groceries of the future; it was so interesting and informative. We spent a lovely afternoon there; but, enjoyed it so much that we returned a few days later. This time the lecture was about taxidermy techniques. Fabulous!
Technically well done, but unfortunately underwhelming exposition if you are interested in the maritime history of the Netherlands. Especially the coverage of the golden period is disappointing.
The maritime museum is housed in an impressive monumental building from the seventeenth century. On display is a huge collection of maritime objects. There is also a copy of a historic VOC ship that can be viewed. The whole thing is top cared for. Set aside plenty of time before your visit because there is a lot to see.
A museum for adults and children, visiting the interior of the boat was a fun experience for everyone. In addition the museum shows us the marine history of Holland, as well as various samples of ships, navigation instruments, maps. They also have a playful learning space for children.
The museum was interesting. Going there as soon as they opened, I found the museum empty. This museum is not among the first museums I would recommend visiting.
Some sections we found interesting because we would like to know a lot about the history. So thought the shipping museum might be interesting. Building from 1656 fortunately the exterior is still reasonable as it used to look. But what a pity that the inside has become so modern we did not find it a nice continuous museum. Lots of stairs and sections which has nothing to do with shipping. Very unfortunate. So also skipped several parts.
Well set out self guided museum tour (guided audio option also available). Heaps of great artefacts and fantastic stories told. free entry and kid friendly. Cloak room to store any large bags or bulky items in secure locker room for free.
Fun and very informative ! The Dreimaster in particular offered insights into times gone by. Surely an interesting object for children ...
The maritime musem is really an underrated highlight of Amsterdam. Because I live here, I occasionally go there because it is in the middle of the city, which also explains why the Dutch have such a strong connection with water activities. I recommend it to anyone who wants to better understand our country.
I found the exhibits more diverse than expected. Ranging from the Tall ship to an exhibit on colonialism. The museum is easy to navigate with plenty of space at the exhibits so you don't feel cramped by other visitors. There is an audio system which you get with the price of admission that guides you with your preferred language.
