Discover Colonial Williamsburg and experience all this renowned historic city City has to offer. Learn about life in colonial America and the American Revolution. Enjoy the historical reenactments and theatrical performances, the vibrant gardens and art museums, plus guided and self-guided tours of the original 18th-century buildings and homes and personal interaction with the townspeople.
Historic Jamestowne offers much to see and do. A typical visit can last 2 to 3 hours, but those wishing to delve deeper into Jamestown's history can easily spend half a day or more exploring the island. See archaeology in action as the Jamestown Rediscovery team continues to excavate parts of the island. Take a tour with an archaeologist, education specialist, or park ranger to hear about the latest discoveries. Break for lunch or a quick snack at the Dale House Café by the water’s edge before continuing on to the Archaearium, a museum that houses some of the most spectacular finds of the two million artifacts uncovered since the Jamestown Rediscovery Project began in 1994
Near the site of the original colony, Jamestown Settlement tells the story of 17th-century Virginia, from the arrival of English colonists in Jamestown in 1607 to the cultural encounters and events that planted the seeds of a new nation. The world of Jamestown, America’s first permanent English colony, comes to life through film, gallery exhibits and outdoor living history.
The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown tells anew the story of the nation’s founding, from the twilight of the colonial period to the dawn of the Constitution and beyond. Exciting new indoor galleries feature period artifacts, immersive environments, interactive exhibits and films, including “The Siege of Yorktown,” with a 180-degree surround screen and dramatic special effects.
See where American independence was won at the Yorktown Battlefield, administered by the National Park Service as part of the Colonial National Historical Park. Here on October 19, 1781, British forces under Lord Charles Cornwallis surrendered to the combined American and French armies led by General George Washington.

The multi day pass allowed us better opportunity to see, and spend more time in all the areas. However, we visited during midweek, so we were disappointed so many buildings were closed, and no outdoor reenactments were held. Overall, it was still wonderful to see, and walk the historic streets and sites.
We went back for three days and still didn’t see everything. During this trip, we visited Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown only. Since it was summer, it was very hot, and some outdoor activities were closed. However, the indoor activities had strong air conditioning, which made a big difference. The historic artifacts and recreations were amazing to see. We especially enjoyed the interactive experiences, such as playing the harpsichord and touching the different types of materials used to make garments in the 1700s. If you visit in the summer, bring cooling towels. We also brought a portable chair and towel for sitting, but we didn’t end up needing them because there were benches throughout the area. I definitely recommend making lunch and dinner reservations ahead of time because the popular restaurants get fully booked. Also, buy your tickets in advance if possible, since the ticket lines were long. Scooters are available to rent for anyone who needs one. Because it was so hot, they handed out water bottles during our visit, which was very appreciated. That may have been a special Fourth of July weekend perk, but it was a nice touch. The live events were spectacular; they had marching soldiers re-enacting 1700 soldiers. They had actors who played key roles like Jefferson reading the Declartions of indepence and Layfayette speaking in a theatre it was wonderful!
Thank you so much for your thoughtful and detailed review! We're thrilled that your three-day trip allowed you to fully explore and enjoy Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown, despite the summer heat. It’s wonderful to hear that the historical artifacts, interactive experiences, and live events left such a memorable impression. Your suggestions, such as bringing cooling towels, reserving meals, and purchasing tickets in advance, are greatly appreciated and will undoubtedly help others plan their visits. We’re glad the indoor air conditioning and the availability of benches enhanced your comfort, and it’s great to know that details like water bottles contributed positively to your experience. As a side note for other readers, Colonial Williamsburg does not offer scooter rentals. However, we have a local company who makes this easy for guests to rent scooters. Thank you for sharing your insights, and we’re honored to be part of a trip that you so warmly recommend!
Amazing adventure! The people working colonies are so knowledgeable and friendly! We loved the experience. I would recommend it to everyone! Well kept sites, clean, easy to navigate. They had cooling tents since it was hot out.
Thank you for your wonderful review! We're thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your adventure and found the staff knowledgeable and friendly. It's great that you appreciated the well-maintained sites, ease of navigation, and thoughtful amenities like the cooling tents. Your recommendation means a lot, and we're glad the experience left such a positive impression on you!
The tour guide Elizabeth was wonderful. Very informative. Very nice person. She answered people’s questions. I would highly recommend this company Viator.
We were very disappointed with the lack of docents to give information. It’s a huge place and if you have difficulty walking at least 3 miles you will want to rent a scooter and that price was $70 not $55 as indicated on their website.
Thank you for your feedback. To clarify, regarding the scooter rental, that is a private company. Colonial Williamsburg does not rent scooters. We did check their website and they do advertise $70 as the rate for scooters that can handle up to 325 pounds. Regarding docents, the Colonial Williamsburg Historic Trades and Skills community uses 18th-century tools and techniques to apprentice in and eventually master more than 20 historic trades and skills. They interact with all guests when visiting the trade building. Our historical buildings, such as the Capitol, the Palace and the Wythe House have tour guides to provide information.
Colonial Williamsburg is a must, so beautiful. Great history and Characters stayed in the period. Martha Washington was great. There is lots of walking - scooters are avail.
My adult daughter and I are here and enjoying every minute. HISTORY is fun! Learn from the experts who are trying to preserve and educate 🩷
This history-loving grandma loved seeing the grands get excited about learning more about the beginnings of our country. They loved the games, the plays, and even were attentive on the tours. They loved the musket firings and the militia training, even though they got fired at the end! One of our favorite things was the horse drawn carriage ride through town. And the art museum was so cool. I would like to return and spend a whole day there!
We are so happy that your grandchildren soaked in all of the history and that it was presented with games, plays and the militia to make it extra interesting for the. Also delighted that you visited the Art Museums. There is so much more to see there than art! We look forward to seeing you again. Kind regards.
Colonial Williamsburg takes you back in time. They dress in historical costume, there are many homes and buildings from back in the distant pass. Alot to see and do. Horse buggy ride, historical buildings, taverns to dine in, so much history. Also did Yorktown and Jamestown which have alot to see as well. Museums, restaurants, good way to see how America came about especially in the 250th anniversary.
We are delighted that you enjoyed the American Historic Triangle! You are exactly right that it is a great year to visit with the 250th anniversary. We look forward to seeing you and your family again.
Great learning experience for our grandchildren. The adults also learned a lot about our history. While in the area we did Yorktown and Jamestown.
