The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa in Alexandria, Egypt, are an ancient burial site dating back to the 2nd century AD. Carved into the rock, the catacombs represent a unique blend of Roman, Greek, and Egyptian funerary traditions. The complex consists of multiple levels and chambers interconnected by passageways. Noteworthy features include ornate sarcophagi, sculpted reliefs, and a central shaft leading to an underground rotunda. The catacombs served as a burial place for both Christians and pagans, reflecting the diverse cultural influences present in ancient Alexandria. Today, the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa are a popular archaeological site, offering visitors a glimpse into the city's rich history and burial practices from antiquity.
The Citadel of Qaitbay, located on the Mediterranean coast of Alexandria, Egypt, is a historic fortress that stands as a prominent example of Islamic military architecture. Constructed in the 15th century, specifically between 1477 and 1480, the citadel was commissioned by Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay to fortify the city against potential invasions.
Pompey's Pillar in Alexandria, Egypt, is a towering monolithic column made of red granite, standing approximately 27 meters tall. This Corinthian-style pillar, intricately carved with floral motifs on its capital, was originally erected in honor of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, dating back to the 4th century AD. Despite its name, there is no direct connection to the Roman general Pompey. The pillar is a solitary structure, having survived the destruction of the ancient Serapeum temple complex where it was originally located. Today, it stands in the open air in the Kom El Shoqafa area, attracting visitors interested in its historical and architectural significance.
