Bus starts from harbour first bus at 9am. It has 10 stops first one being a shopping mall which opens at 10 am. There is a stop for the local thermal outdoor swimming pool which is open to the public. The best stop for us was the botanical gardens and easy walk around the beautiful trees shrubs and flowers. It is open 9 til 8 pm and is free entry. There is a small coffee shop and facilities. At the stop for the city shopping there is a cat cafe. There are motorbike and aircraft museums around the route. Whole route is 45 minutes busses every hour.
From redeeming the voucher (ticket kiosk had such a long difficulty that we missed the hourly departure to the infrequent loop to the uncommunicative driver (couldn't tell where most of the stops were, he just blew through), to the out of synch, repetitive videos, this was a waste of money. We finally just got off and walked. If we'd waited for the bus, we'd have been waiting for a long time in the wind and rain. The bus also stalled continually at most stoplights.
Pleasant for exploring a town. Convenient for people with disabilities. Get on and off wherever you want.
Too expensive, not worth the money. Bus travelled mainly on outskirts of small town. No earphones, only a pre-recorded commentary which was very low in volume so difficult ultimately to hear
Vastly over priced £36 per adult! It's a 30 minute drive around mostly industrial area. There's only 1 bus doing this route. The driver was stressed he told numerous people that. No earphones, but I doubt there was any commentary anyway. Don't waste your money.
I paid £85 for 2 adults for a 35 bus ride. I only found out the price when I checked my card transactions. I didn’t see any prices displayed.
The bus route is good but the driver waited 25 extra minutes at the bus stop to sell tickets and therefore ran behind schedule for everyone. We only did the route once and ended up walking as the schedule was not consistent. The driver was nice enough but you really need to,stay on a schedule for a system like this
This is not worth the money. There’s no real narrative, only a video on a tv screen that you can’t hear. It’s a very small town - you can easily walk the entire place from your ship!
Thank you for sharing your feedback, Stephen. We’re truly sorry to hear the Hop On Hop Off experience did not meet your expectations. Akureyri is indeed a compact and walkable town, and we understand how this may have felt underwhelming compared to other destinations. We’ll be sure to share your comments with the local operator so they can improve the narration and overall experience. We greatly appreciate your honesty, as it helps us ensure future guests have a better time.
Very expensive for a 45 minute (if that) tour of Akyreyri (which is extremely small) £10/$15 would have been a fairer price for this
Dear mikeymikeyuk, Thank you for sharing your feedback. We understand your concern about the price and appreciate your honesty. While we aim to provide guests with a convenient and informative overview of Akureyri, we also recognize that Iceland can be more expensive compared to many other destinations due to local operating costs. Your comments are valuable and will be shared with our team as we continually review our tours and pricing. We hope you still enjoyed exploring Akureyri and that the tour added some context and comfort to your visit. Kind regards, The Iceland Highlights Team
