A Tour to Visit Himeji's Popular Destinations in a day!

Description
"Himeji Castle" and "Enkyoji Temple", both of which have a history of more than 1,000 years, are World Heritage Sites that must not be missed when you visit Himeji. The attraction of Himeji castle is its pure white walls, which are called the most beautiful castle in Japan. Also, the inside of the castle still has the equipment used for warfare 400 years ago, when the samurai lived there. You also can't help but feel a sense of historical romance when you see the dignified appearance of the castle. The tour at Himeji Castle alone would be enough to satisfy you, but afterward, we will take a bus and a ropeway to Engyoji Temple on Mt.Shosya. The temple is one of the largest temples in Japan and has many cultural assets designated by the government. Once you step into Mt. Shosha, you will be overwhelmed by the serene mountains and feel a sense of purity.

Itinerary
Castle View Deck: An observation deck at Himeji Station from which you can see Himeji Castle. Enjoy the unique views of the castle that you can only experience from this viewing deck, such as the long main street leading to the castle! The powerful image of Himeji Castle towering from amidst the modern buildings is a pride of Himeji.
Otemae Street: This is the main street connecting Himeji Station to Himeji Castle. As you walk along this exciting boulevard, the figure of the castle drawing closer and larger will surely make you look forward to exploring the castle even more!
Himeji Castle: Himeji Castle, a world-famous castle, is both beautiful and strong in appearance, and was the first historical building in Japan to be registered as a World Heritage Site. Its graceful appearance, like that of a heron spreading its wings, has earned it the nickname of “White Heron Castle”. Stepping inside, you can still experience the period style of architecture, which is still impressive to visitors after more than 400 years.
Kokoen Garden: After visiting Himeji Castle, enjoy the vast Japanese garden built on the castle grounds, where you can enjoy a view of the beautiful Himeji Castle from among the lush greenery of the garden. Feel the traditional beauty of Japan.
Mt.Shosha Ropeway Sanroku Station: Welcome to Shoshazan. In the old days, people used to walk up the steep path to Engyo-ji Temple. But for us modern people, the ropeway is a relief. The view of the city of Himeji from the gondola is exceptional.
Mt.Shosha Ropeway Sanjo Station: After getting off the ropeway, head to the mountain entry reception to pay the admission fee.
Engyo-ji Temple: It is a mountain temple where you can enjoy a unique landscape that combines traditional Buddhist architecture and mountain nature. You will surely be impressed by the sheer size of this structure, built in the middle of the mountains in the days when there were no cars or electricity! The view of the city from the stage is also breathtaking. Some buildings have actually been used as filming locations for Hollywood movies and Japanese TV dramas!

As a native Japanese (my husband is not), I debated whether we should hire a guide or explore on our own. I’m so glad we chose this private tour. Yoriko was incredibly knowledgeable and gave us more than our money’s worth. She was also very patient with my arthritis-related limitations and with my husband, an amateur photographer who likes to spend plenty of time taking pictures. She was a perfect host and made our trip truly memorable. If we return to Himeji, we wouldn’t hesitate to ask her to be our guide again.
Visiting Himeji Castle (one of the few still original and in good condition in Japan) is a must-see experience. Starting with the fortress itself, with its imposing exterior and no less impressive interior, and continuing through its gardens, inside and outside the walled enclosure. Getting there is very easy and fast, with one of the bullet trains linking Kyoto with Hiroshima. The castle is a short walk from the train station or a few minutes by taxi. Plan the times well (better in the morning) so that the doors do not close without having been able to visit it calmly, especially the interior gardens.
Our tour guide had insufficient English proficiency and we had difficulty to understand him. However, visiting Himeji castle, Buddhist temple and sacred places on the mount Shosha was a great opportunity to touch upon Japan's history, culture, religious traditions.
Yoriko-San brought us the Castle of Hemiji, in an amazing way, in great detail. We also visited the Enkyoji Temple, a very special place of rest. She is a top prepared, very knowledgeable and very pleasant guide.
The guide Yoriko Nakagawa took my family and me on an excellent tour on Himeji Castle, Kokoen Garden, and Engyoji Temple at Mt. Shosha on June 10, 2025, despite a heavy rain that day. She is very knowledgeable, professional, and caring. She also helped us bought the bus/ropeway tickets for Engyoji Temple at Mt. Shosha well in advance, saving us much time on the trip. At the end of the tour, she rode with us on the bus to get to Himeji Station where we can do some last-minute shopping and take the shuttle bus back to the cruise terminal on time. I highly recommend taking this tour!
Josh was a great guide. It was interesting to hear about the castle’s history. The ropeway and the temple were also cool. Some of the time spent there felt like a nature walk.
It was nice to not have to look at maps or public transportation schedules. Our guide spoke good English, was friendly, and knowledgeable. Great tour, even in the rain.
I cannot overstate how wonderful our day was. Yachiyo was our guide and she was truly incredible. She messaged me ahead of time to confirm the meeting point and time, and also sent a restaurant option to make sure it was okay with us in advance. As a vegetarian, I greatly appreciated the ability to check out the menu ahead of time. And from the minute we met up with her, she gave us an amazing experience. She was friendly, patient, highly knowledgeable, and willing to take photos. She was also very helpful in answering questions and even escorted us at the end of the tour to get our stamps at the train station and running an errand at one of the stores. She truly went above and beyond and I'd recommend this tour and her as a guide to anyone. Thank you so much Yachiyo!
First class service, as they begin by meeting you in Himeji Station with a sign with your name! Then you visit Himeji Castle with an amazing tour guide (in our case, it was the awesome Coco!!!) who will give you details about the castle and it's surroundings. You'll then get to go up to Himeji Castles top floor and be able to see all of the city! Second, you will go to an amazing garden and have lunch INSIDE the garden. Then, comes Mt. Shosha, with Engyoji Temple. Peaceful and the location for scenes in "The Last Samurai" movie. Highly recommend.
