Itinerary
Upon arrival early in the morning you will be picked up from the airport direct to the starting gate or get picked up at your accommodation and start driving to Marangu starting gate. The Kilimanjaro mountain is Africa's highest mountain and the world's tallest free-standing mountain at 5895 meters above sea level. It has three major volcanic centers which are Shira (4160 m), snow-capped Kibo (5895 m), and Mawenzi. For the Marangu route you will be ascending to the top.
Trek from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut at an altitude of 3700 m. This should take you 3-4 hours. After about 15 minutes, you will leave the glades of the rain forest and follow an ascending path on the open moorlands to the Horombo encampment. You will get amazing views of Mawenzi and the summit of Kibo. Look out for giant senecio and lobelias. You may start to feel the affects of the altitude today.
Today is considered optional since it starts and ends at Horombo Hut, however it is an important day for acclimatization that will increase your chances of reaching the summit. Today you can rest at the camp or have a day trek to Zebra Rocks (4200m) and Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4300m). You will be returning to Horombo Hut for overnight.
Very early in the morning (midnight to 2am), begin the climb to the summit on steep and heavy scree or snow up to Gilman's point located on the crater rim at 18640 ft/5861 m (4-5 hours). Continue to ascend to Uhuru Peak which is the highest point in Africa: 19340 ft / 5895 m (1-2 hours). You willl find unbelievable views at every turn. Get your picture taken at the summit. From here, we now begin the descent, stopping for lunch and a rest at Kibo before continuing on to Horombo encampment for dinner and overnight (3-4 hours).
After breakfast, a steady descent takes you down through moorland to Mandara Hut (2700m / 8858 ft). The first stopping place will be at the Marangu Route. Continue descending through lush forest on a good path to the National Park gate at Marangu (1830 m / 6004 ft). At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy, gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). You will find a car waiting for you at the gate where you wil get hot lunch before start drivng back to Moshi/Arusha for your overnight or airport drop off if you are flying out the same day after the tour.

Please be cautious when booking with this provider Afrishare as the company owner, Ibrahim is unfortunately running a really poor business. We booked a five day tour with him, where 2 of the 5 days the car broke down. The point of a safari is to ensure that the car takes you comfortably from point A to point B. During the first breakdown we had to jump into another tour companies vehicle and join another family for one full day and then additionally on the second incident we had to spend half the day waiting for the car to be fixed. On top of all this the itinerary for the safari was poorly planned. We did not get enough time to appropriately see the national parks, for example at the Ndutu National Park we drove there, slept and left straight away the next morning. Not allowing us to explore for animals there. It merely felt like a stop over and not what was sold to us to see animals. If he was an honest business, he would understand what he put us through, especially considering that this was an anniversary trip that we had organized together and provide us a reasonable compensation. However, he was only willing to compensate for a permit, not the two days we had lost. Ibrahim went back and forth with us and made some absurd comments on his lack of responsibility for giving us a very old rusted and clearly unfunctional car. I advise to any future Safari clients. Please do not book with him!! Lastly one clear point I want to make is that our guide, Deo, was absolutely phenomenal in providing us such an amazing service and making sure that we were comfortable even in these difficult situations! He did his very best to make sure that he could give us the best tour with the limited time given with the car situation. If it was not for Deo, we would have canceled the trip on our 3rd day when the car broke down again with 2 new issues.
We had a very nice trip with very nice and nice guides , chef and porters . The pace was perfect, the food good and the service excellent from everyone who helped us to Uhuru, peak 😁 And all 4 followed reached the top !!
– Afrishare Teamet
I had an incredible experience visiting Tanzania with Afrishare. The director of the company, Ibra, helped us to coordinate hiking Mount Kilimanjaro, a safari in Arusha National Park, and a month-long course on Landscape Restoration. Ibra taught us cultural lessons and did an impeccable job of selecting host families and making sure we were comfortable with them. Each day he went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed to have an excellent learning environment. Ibra is especially good at sharing his positive attitude and coordinating logistics with many stakeholders. We were also able to spend two days on safari in Arusha National Park. It was a magical experience as we were able to go on a walking safari and get very close to giraffes, water buffalo, and flamingos! After our course ended, thanks to Ibra, we were also able to plan a hiking excursion up Mount Kilimanjaro. Ibra selected a team of professional and well-trained guides to accompany us on our journey. We were able to summit and see marvelous views during our trek up the mountain. The accommodations and food on the mountain were incredible as well and surpassed my expectations. Afrishare helped to make my time in Tanzania a wonderful and unforgettable experience. I highly recommend working with Ibra and his team at Afrishare to plan your next adventure in Tanzania!
We will be happy to host you again in the near future. Thank you for your support and trust. Welcome back again. We are happy that we were able to make you happy and enjoy your experience with us. we will always do better.
My friends and I hiked the Marangu Route (5 days) up Kilimanjaro through Afrishare and had a wonderful experience! The food was excellent, the accomodations were comfortable, and with the help of our experienced guides and a great team of porters, we made it to the summit. We felt safe and well-supported throughout our journey. The director of Afrishare, Ibra Mkwizu, was a particularly stellar host who made our experience in Tanzania welcoming and stress-free. He coordinated every aspect of our hike, including transportation and lodging on either end. Ibra sent us a driver to pick us up from Arusha, hosted us at his own home for breakfast, personally worked with us to get every piece of gear we needed and advise us on what we should pack, gave us a place to safely store the rest of our luggage, and dropped us off with our crew to begin the hike. When we got off the trail, he again hosted us for a home-cooked lunch, provided us with a room to shower, and dropped us off at the airport. We never had to worry about logistics while Ibra was taking care of us. In addition, Ibra acted as our logistics coordinator while we spent three weeks in Moshi and Arusha for a college geography course. He took care of everything — park fees, transportation, preparing host families for us to stay with, packing lunches for our days out in the field, and much more. Ibra traveled with us every day to make sure we had everything we needed to explore the Kilimanjaro region. He took on these responsibilities in addition to his normal work directing Afrishare, and did a wonderful job. I would recommend Afrishare to anyone hoping to travel to Tanzania — for a Kilimanjaro hike, safari, or anything else!

Excellent staff, food was better than what we are used to at home. Just an amazing experience. We were able to do the trek in four days and this is thanks to Afrishare's crew. Highly recommend.

We loved the 5 day Marangu route up to the summit of Kilimanjaro. The guides were patient, caring, and often asked how everyone was doing. They went at a nice easy pace and slowed down if we asked them to, and if we wanted to quicken the pace they were fine with that too. The food prepared by the chef was always deicious, and more than enough at each meal, and the porters were strong and sturdy and carried the essentials. THe hut accommodateions consisted of bunkbeds with mattresses and pillows, and were warm and cozy and had electric lights in them. All members of the team were polite, friendly and had the answers to any questions we had. I would definitely book with Afrishare again on our next trip here!

We took Kilimanjaro on the Marangu route in 5 days in December 2019 with Afrishare Trekking and Safaris. Briefly, I can safely recommend it. We were 2: me and my wife. The guides were Alex and Godfrey. Besides them, there was a cook, a waiter and five porters on the team - all great guys, all worked to cheers. Basically, there's no question for anyone. Everyone gave it their best shot. The booking and coordination with Ibrahim also went like butter. Since the first letter, and I will stress this, he has responded strictly to the substance, clearly, to all the questions raised, without vague wording. This is rare in Africa. We approached several other places, including directly to a guide advertised in a famous Russian forum. His answers immediately made it clear that he was even reading letters, answering with some kind of pattern. With Ibrahim, it was the opposite, we realized that everything would be clear, so we also prepaid from Russia without a doubt, although it is thought that in Africa it is better not to pay anything up front. Ibrahim sent a handy link to the Visa/Mastercard payment acceptance form. Yes, the payment system charged a 3.5% fee, but it's still much more convenient than some obscure bank transfer. 30% of the tour amount seems to me to be quite adequate advance payment. The balance was paid in cash the day before. It went so clearly that it didn't take a single phone call, literally a few emails and that was it. The day before kick-off, I wrote Ibrahim the name in advance, guide Alex and Ibrahim's assistant Magembe came to our hotel. They looked at our equipment and, in general, gave the go-ahead. The next day, a car and a crew arrived and we started. All the way up we went in a comfortable mode, fed well and plenty, for slaughter. Guides were always on hand, ready to answer or help, without imposing, getting violent with conversations, for us that is a plus. In general, it was very comfortable to go, all you need - always on schedule, taking your time, but also not bored, wasting your time. The storm itself came out later than the others, at 1:00 a.m. Alex and Godfrey were some robots at all, coming up with us without their water, not drinking at all! Helped carry our backpack with our water and tea, we took 2 thermoses with us from Russia - highly recommended! Both up and down (it's no less hard to go down, by the way, my wife was going harder from the top than up) were going at the right pace, Alex singing spirited songs, and generally making jokes about everyone we overtook. Then he and Godfrey at the top were photographed more than we were, as if they were the first time they had gone there;) In fact, to repeat the bottom line, Afrishare Trekking and Safaris, despite offering one of the lowest prices for climbing (which is also important), organized and conducted everything in the best possible way. Yeah, you can probably pick on something if you want to, maybe someone needs to carry them in their arms, but we don't have a single question. Everything was high.
