unreliable

I can not rate the experience for this charter being we didn't go out with them as planned, and I wish I could have so that I could give a proper rating. they called cancelled the trip for us 3 hours before departure leaving us having to find a last minute charter (which we didn't might I add) giving us a inexcusable reason why they could not go out. I would stay clear of this charter when looking for a day out on the water as they are not reliable.

Amazing time! Awesome boat crew!

Captain Hand and first mate Caleb were awesome! Caleb answered any questions we had and helped to set the lures and coach us through reeling in our catches! This was a first for my family and we truly enjoyed ourselves! Good size boat with A/C and fridge and ice chest to keep snacks cold. My group caught barracudas, bonito and Amber jack and the boat that went before us caught barracudas and mahi mahi there were also several huge tarpon hanging around the docks where they clean the fish! We had a great time!

Buyer beware of cowboy cowgirl fishing charters

Book with Cowboy Cowgirl Sport Fishing Charters at your own risk. My husband and brother-in-law have both been offshore fishing for more than 20 years, and they both agreed this was, by far, the worst charter they’ve ever been on. We understand that fishing is never guaranteed. Sometimes the fish simply aren’t biting. That wasn’t the issue. The problem was the crew’s complete lack of effort and engagement. During the entire four-hour trip, neither my husband nor my brother-in-law ever touched a rod, baited a hook, or had an opportunity to fish. Out of the entire boat, only one customer even got to catch a fish—a single barracuda. Meanwhile, nearly every other charter in the marina was coming back with photos of multiple catches and happy customers. Even if the fishing was slow that day, there’s no excuse for clients paying hundreds of dollars only to spend four hours watching instead of fishing. The most disappointing part is that after reading other reviews, I realized this doesn’t appear to be an isolated incident. Multiple reviewers describe the same lack of effort and poor customer experience. I wish I had read those reviews before booking because I would have chosen one of the many other charters in Key West with crews that work hard to make sure everyone has a chance to fish. And based on the owner’s responses to other negative reviews, I fully expect they’ll blame the weather, the fish, or even the customers instead of accepting responsibility. Unfortunately, after our experience, that wouldn’t surprise me at all.

Operator response

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re genuinely sorry your trip did not meet your expectations. We would like to clarify a few points for anyone reading your review. The day of your trip was one of the slowest fishing days we’ve experienced in quite some time. Due to heavy seaweed conditions and the summer fishing pattern, many boats across Key West struggled that day. While a handful of boats had success, those were generally either longer offshore fishing charters with more time to reach distant fishing grounds or simply the few that happened to find the right bite that day. Our 4-hour shared fishing charters are designed to maximize fishing time within a limited window. During the summer months, we explain before departure that fish often move farther offshore, making a half-day trip more challenging than a 6- or 8-hour charter. Unfortunately, fishing conditions are never guaranteed, regardless of the experience of the captain or crew. We respectfully disagree with the statement that our crew lacked effort. Our captains and mates take great pride in working hard for every guest, and the overwhelming majority of our reviews reflect that commitment. On difficult fishing days, the results may not always match the effort, but our dedication to our guests never changes. We appreciate your feedback and sincerely regret that this particular day did not provide the experience you were hoping for.

Fishing with minimal catch

The crew and the owner were great on working with us due to the fact that we got rained out on our first booking. Unfortunately the fish were not biting much which made for a little bit of a boring trip. Also, it would have been nice if they had some music playing in the cabin as well as toilet paper and running water to wash your hands in the head. I know you can’t flush the paper but a woman needs paper.

Operator response

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re glad our crew and ownership team were able to work with you after your original trip was affected by weather. We always do our best to accommodate guests when Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate. We’re sorry the fishing wasn’t more productive on the day you joined us. Unfortunately, some days the fish simply aren’t feeding aggressively, and while our captains and mates work hard to find active fish, that’s one aspect of fishing no charter can fully control. As the saying goes, it’s called fishing, not catching. We also appreciate your comments regarding the cabin and restroom amenities. Your feedback about music, toilet paper, and hand-washing water is helpful, and we’ll review those items with our crew to ensure guests have the best experience possible. Thank you again for giving us the opportunity to take you fishing in Key West. We hope you’ll consider joining us again in the future, perhaps on one of our longer shared charters or a private fishing charter, which allows more flexibility to target different species and fishing grounds. And don’t forget—go to BiteBackBrand and under Local Legends, go to Cowboy to get your t-shirts and other gear. We appreciate your business and your honest feedback.

Great Trip

We had a great trip and caught a lot of fish. We stayed out for about 6 hours which was 2 hours longer than we paid for. The captain and mate were great. Daniel was very fun and kept the boat lively.

We’re happy to hear the captain and mate took good care of you, and Daniel will definitely appreciate the shoutout. He works hard to keep the energy up and make the trip enjoyable for everyone aboard. Thanks again for fishing with Cowboy Cowgirl Sportfishing Charters. We caught a lot of fish. Our crew was awesome and very friendly. I am already planning my next trip with them.

This was a deep water trolling trip. We caught a lot of fish due to the crews knowledge and dedication. There were very vigilant and kept us on the move to schools of fish. Everyone caught at least three fish plus. Great group of fishermen.

Operator response

Thank you for the fantastic review. We're thrilled to hear you had such a great trip and are already planning your next adventure with us. It’s great to know the crew’s hard work, dedication, and local knowledge helped put everyone on fish. When the fish are feeding, staying mobile and finding active schools can make all the difference, and we're glad it paid off for your group. Hearing that everyone caught multiple fish is exactly the kind of experience we strive to provide on our shared fishing charters. We truly appreciate your kind words about the crew and are grateful you chose Cowboy Cowgirl Sportfishing Charters. We look forward to welcoming you back to Key West for another great day on the water. No fishing? Hmmmm ….

Not everyone will be able to fish. Only 1 person of my party of 3 actually held a rod. I paid for 3 people to fish. Boat is not in great condition and something happened to motor on way back and it took over 2 hours to get back to land. AC was either not working or it was hot in cabin because doors were left open. The crew was great and knowledgeable; however to spend that much money, not be able to fish, and take hours to putt putt back to land was a bit much. Only 2 barracuda were caught. We expected mahi mahi, but was told that front came through day before and wasn’t great condition for fishing. So why not reschedule? Will not be doing this again.

Operator response

Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry the trip did not meet your expectations. Shared fishing charters are designed so multiple guests rotate through rods throughout the trip, especially when conditions are slow or fish are not actively biting. Unfortunately, the weather front that moved through the day before made for very tough fishing conditions across much of the fleet that day, which the crew did explain onboard. As for rescheduling, weather in Key West can change quickly, and while fishing may slow after a front, many trips the following day can still produce great catches. If we canceled or rescheduled every time conditions looked less than ideal, many guests would lose opportunities to get out on the water altogether. Regarding the return trip, we did experience a mechanical issue on the way back, and we apologize for the delay getting to shore. While frustrating, safety is always our top priority, and the captain made the proper decision to bring everyone back safely rather than rush the vessel. We do appreciate your comments about the crew. Our captains and mates work extremely hard to make the best of difficult conditions and give guests the best experience possible, even on slower fishing days.
