Don’t book in advance (weather) and don’t book this tour

Don’t book through a tour guide, don’t book in advance, and don’t book this tour! Sapa and the surrounding area was in a cloud bank the entire time and we couldn’t see a block away. The tour was not good and Cat Cat village is a tacky offensive tourist trap. As far as this tour specifically goes, the two guides were OK. The hotel was the worst of the 11 we stayed at in all of Vietnam, and we stayed at as cheap as $18 and were happy at all but here. All meals were at the hotel, and since my partner is pescatarian, he got fish sticks lunch and dinner each day. We would have preferred to do Fansipan on our own and not be rushed, and it would have been easy to arrange ourselves. That was the only thing on the agenda for the whole day, so we were back for lunch with nothing to do all afternoon and no suggestions. Sapa is an armpit of a town with everyone trying very aggressively to sell you stuff. If we had booked the trip individually we would have gotten a bus berth to ourselves, but since we booked together we were crammed into the same one. This would be crowded for two average Asian people, but we are 6’4” and 5’11”, and we did not fit and were miserable! We were told the bus would leave at 6:00-6:15 AM, so we showed up at 5:55 without breakfast or coffee. I asked when the bus would leave and she was vague, so we were too scared to leave and get food. It turned out we left after 7:15!! For the way back our guides had told us twice that we were going to get sandwiches for the way home, but we were not given any, so we were on the bus 3-12 midnight and were hungry.
