Kibale National Park is renowned for its remarkable primate diversity, holding the highest concentration of primates in East Africa. With over 1,500 chimpanzees and 13 primate species, the park provides an exceptional chance to observe these animals in their natural forest habitat. Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park was an unforgettable experience and something we would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Uganda. Before the trek began, we attended a short but informative briefing. First, there was a video introduction, followed by a detailed explanation from one of the park rangers. They placed a strong emphasis on the rules of conduct around the chimpanzees, which we really appreciated as it showed how seriously the park takes the protection of these incredible animals. Our lodge had provided us with gaiters beforehand, and they turned out to be extremely useful. There are many ants in the forest, and having the extra protection made the trek much more comfortable. We headed into the forest in a small group and were pleasantly surprised that it didn't take long before we found our first chimpanzees. The initial encounter was calm and peaceful, giving us plenty of time to observe them and capture some amazing photos and videos. After a while, the chimpanzees started moving deeper into the forest at quite an impressive pace. Together with our assigned rangers, we followed them through the jungle. Be prepared—once they decide to move, they move fast! Keeping up with them is almost impossible, and eventually we lost sight of the group altogether. That didn't take away from the experience, though. The walk through the rainforest was fascinating in its own right, and our rangers shared a wealth of knowledge about the forest ecosystem, the chimpanzees, and the other wildlife that calls Kibale home. Their passion and expertise made the trek even more enjoyable. At the end of the experience, we each received a certificate, which was a nice souvenir to take home. Overall, this was a fantastic wildlife experience that we would absolutely recommend. Seeing wild chimpanzees in their natural habitat is something truly special and well worth doing when visiting Uganda. While it's such a memorable experience that everyone should do it at least once, we personally felt that one trek was enough for us—mainly because the experience is unique and complete in itself.
